William F. Smith

William F. Smith, lovingly known to many as “Uncle Butch,” passed away on September 26, 2026, in Akron, Ohio. He was born on May 3, 1942, in Akron.

Butch built a strong working life through years of dedicated employment. He worked for more than 20 years as a candy maker with Arnold’s Candy Company, and he also worked for the City of Akron in the Parks Division. Outside of work, he enjoyed keeping busy. He liked tinkering in his yard and in the garage with different projects, and he especially enjoyed painting landscapes of many varieties, as well as cartoons and trains. Butch was long time member of the Kingdom Hall in Mogadore, Ohio, for many years, ever since they were on Market Street. 

He will be remembered not only for the things he did, but for the way he made people feel. Butch was known for his sense of humor and for enjoying a good-natured time picking fun at his family members. To those who loved him most, he was a steady and caring presence. Uncle Butch was always there for his nieces and nephews and was more like a father figure in many ways. He taught his nieces and nephews how to drive in the Gilcrest Road parking lot, and he was there for many other important milestones in their lives. Those moments of guidance, laughter, and dependable love will remain a lasting part of his family’s memories.

He is survived by his sisters, Shirley Gambol and Mae Nolan, and by his brother, Frank Smith. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, including Susan and John Cook, Linda Kelly, Mary Patton, James Kelly, Dick and Nancy Kelly, Earl Kelly, and Timothy Kelly. He is also lovingly remembered by great-nieces and great-nephews Angela, Melinda, Samantha, and William “Billy,” as well as by his great-great-great niece, Eleanor. His place in their lives was special, and his love, humor, and presence will continue to be felt across the generations of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Earl Smith, and an infant sister, Mary Smith.

In keeping with his wishes, Butch will be cremated, and his family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. He will be remembered with affection, gratitude, and love by all who knew him.
