Thomas Whitacre Jr.
Thomas Whitacre Jr., 85, of Akron, passed away on October 5, 2014 with his loving family by his side. Tommy was born March 20, 1929 in Kitzmiller, Maryland to the late Thomas and Edna Whitacre.
He served in the U.S. Navy for three years and then returned home and worked as a coal miner. He retired from Progressive Stamping after 43 years of service. Tommy loved fishing and could often be found on his boat or in his waders at the Mogadore Resevoir.
In 1951, Tommy met the love of his life, Colleen. They loved to bet one dollar on the Browns games. We won't say who Tommy bet on, but he usually won the dollar. Every day, Tommy and Colleen went to Click's for groceries and a cup of coffee. He knew how to fix almost anything and was known for his green thumb.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Avis Wilt and Pearl Love.
Tommy will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Colleen; sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Penny and Mark and Stephanie; grandsons, Adam (Katie), Alex (Carrie), and granddaughter, Soley; great-granddaughter, Kendall Grace; siblings, Butch (Jean), Wayne (Billie), Robert (Barbara), Pat Rockwell, Jean, and Sandy Hudson; many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Kim Lawrence officiating, with visitation for one hour prior. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
