Susan E. Finan

Susan E. Finan, age 87, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on April 14, 2018 after a prolonged battle with a debilitating mental illness.
She was the daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Spalding and an Akron resident. She graduated from St. Mary High School in 1949 and worked most of her life as a secretary; she retired from the Akron Public Schools in 2002.
Susan was deeply committed to her Catholic faith and had a lifelong love of the English language; she often wrote epic poems to celebrate special occasions.
Other than her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; and four siblings, Anna Louise Wilke, Milly Tarricone, Joan Borowski, and Daniel Spalding.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jane Finan of Akron, and her sister, Fran Shand of Cuyahoga Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne Street, Akron, on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 12:00 PM, where Father Mike Williamson will celebrate Susan's life.
Family and friends may visit at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 26, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), www.nami.org
