Shirley Ann Makar

Shirley Ann Makar (nee Lafferty) went Home to be with the Lord on December 20, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born in East Liverpool, OH to parents Daniel and Helen, Shirley was a longtime resident of Akron, where she devoted her professional life to serving the elderly and individuals living with mental illnesses as a licensed social worker.

Shirley’s life will be remembered as a story of determination as she ended up graduating from college when she was in her 50’s. She went on to become a dedicated member of the community and a loving and present mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Danny; her two children, Todd (Michelle) Mellon and Karen Lile; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is reunited in death with her late husbands, Herman Mellon and Bob Schreiner; son, Lennie; and son-in-law, John.

Calling hours will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Road, Akron, OH 44305. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. A private burial service for the immediate family will follow.
