Samuel Joseph “Skip” Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished member of the Akron community, passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on July 21, 1950, Skip lived a life marked by dedication to family, a passion for classic hot rods, and a deep connection to the simple joys of life.
Skip was a man of many talents and diverse interests. He had a lifelong love of working with his hands, taking pride in doing just about everything himself, a testament to his resourcefulness and steadfast spirit. He spent almost 30 years forming metal in various ways at Marco Manufacturing. He was an avid enthusiast of vintage automobiles, particularly his treasured 1955 Chevy Bel Aire, 1935 Chevy Coupe, and 1932 Ford Coupe—vehicles that he cared for meticulously and enjoyed sharing with friends and family who appreciated his passion. Fishing was another cherished pastime, especially those peaceful outings on Nimisila Lake with his close friend Greg Holland, where he found solace and a connection to nature. Skip was also a devoted dog lover, lovingly caring for his two Chihuahuas, Sophie and Sassy, who brought joy and companionship to his home.
Family was at the heart of Skip’s life. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Smith, who stood by his side through all of life’s moments. They shared a strong and enduring bond built on mutual respect and affection. His son Michael Smith, along with Michael’s wife Katie, and Sam Jr's son Gavin Smith, carry forward Skip’s legacy with love and remembrance. The loss of his son Sam Smith Jr. is deeply felt, as is the memory of Skip’s parents, Harry and Edna Smith. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Bob, Ed, Jack, Charlie, and Pat Smith, and his sister Gayle Smith. Skip is fondly remembered by numerous cousins, other family members, and friends who knew him as a man of warmth, generosity, and quiet strength.
A visitation to honor and remember Skip will be held on April 18, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 131 N Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305. This will be followed immediately by his funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location. Family, friends, and all who were touched by his life are invited to gather, share memories, and pay their respects.
Samuel Joseph Smith’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and the joy found in both work and play. Through his commitment to family, his passion for classic cars, his fishing adventures, and the companionship of his beloved dogs, Skip enriched the lives of those around him. Though he has departed from this world, the echoes of his laughter, the imprint of his kindness, and the memories of his spirited nature will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
