Robert S. Hinman
Robert S. Hinman "Bob", born January 20, 1921, beloved husband of 67 years to the late Marie (Hamman), went into the arms of Jesus Christ his Lord and Saviour on September 15, 2014 and is with the love of his life Marie. Bob is survived by his sister and best friend, Mae Packan who celebrated her 100th birthday in April. A devoted father of Julie (Bill) Mikolajczyk, Mike (Kathy), Susan (late Melvin) Bechemer, Patrick (Christine), and Tim (Gayle); loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Bob grew up in South Akron on Lamparter Street (which he affectionately referred to as Goose Town). As a young man he sang with St. Paul's Episcopal choir and then in the Central High School choir as a tenor. He attended Leggett Elementary School, graduated from Central High School, and attended the University of Akron where he met the love of his life, Marie Hamman, on the stairs of Buchtel Hall. They married January 10, 1940 and began their family.
Bob served his country in WWII in the U.S. Army and was deployed to the Asiatic Pacific with the 32nd Signal Company. During his military service Bob was a sanctioned boxer with the U.S. Army Corps. After returning from the service, Bob and Marie raised their five children in North Hill on Big Falls Avenue. Bob umpired Pony League Baseball and enjoyed playing football with his boys. As a devoted husband, Bob worked two jobs to support his wife's return to college to complete her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Bob retired from Borden Dairy after delivering milk retail to the home and later wholesale. Bob and Marie were advanced Bridge players, avid golfers, bowlers, and danced whenever they had an opportunity.
After retirement they wintered in Naples, Florida for nearly 20 years where they enjoyed all of these activities with their friends; not to mention hosting their five children, spouses, and grandchildren's vacations during Spring Break. Bob's children will deeply miss his love of life, wonderful sense of humor, remarkable generosity and romantic whimsy - which is his legacy.
The family would like to thank Denise, his caregiver, for her devotion to Dad and the staff of Akron General Visiting Nurse Service Hospice on Ridgewood Road for their exceptional care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Akron General Visiting Nurse Service Hospice.
