Rickie E. Essick

Rickie E. “Hammer” Essick, 63, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on August 30, 2026. Born on April 12, 1963, to Leonard and Norgie Essick, Rickie grew up with a spirit marked by strength, loyalty, and quiet determination. He attended Archbishop Hoban High School, where he was a celebrated athlete in both basketball and football. Rickie loved to laugh, enjoyed cooking, and never turned down a good card game. He cherished time spent with family and friends, who lovingly gave him the name “Hammer,” for his unwavering protection he offered those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Norgie Essick, sister Elaine (Richard) Terrell, brothers Wayne Greer and Len Essick, and stepmother, Shirley Smothers.

He is survived by his sisters, Sandy and Fontain Essick and Tiffany Alexander, ex-wife Tanya Essick, Bridget Varner, nephews Richard Terrell, Gavin Bell, Angelo and Armani Alexander, and special niece, LaShawn Terrell. Mourning his loss are also best friends, Anthony Garr and Steve George.
