Richard “Richie” Thompson, 53, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026. Born in Akron, Ohio, he grew up in Lakemore where he ended up living most of his life and raising his family.
Richie was the loving father of Kara (Brendan) Prebish, Kailee Thompson, and Chris Wunder. He also was a loving husband to Angela Thompson. Richie was a proud “Poppy” to Tanner, Trevor, Eliannah, Jemmah, Mila, and Christopher. He is also survived by his loving and supportive sister, Jennifer (Abdalla) Yasin; his niece, Kaylynn (Jeff); nephews Kareem, Nadeem, and Ameer; his aunt Mary Jane Wines; and many cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was welcomed into heaven by those who went before him, including his mom, dad, uncle and grandparents.
When his body and mind were healthy, Richie found joy in the simple things he loved most-fishing, firework shows, working in sweeper trucks alongside his mom at one time, and mowing grass with his friend Greg. He was rarely without a Pepsi in hand and was known for having quite the sweet tooth! Often leaving Reese’s cup wrappers tucked into couch cushions. During the last couple years, he enjoyed field trips (a train ride being a favorite moment) and going out to eat with the other residents. He also enjoyed watching his bird feeder and sitting in the main lobby chatting and cracking jokes.
Richie was an incredible father and grandfather. When the girls were in school he was proud of all their accomplishments and was always there to support them at sporting events and concerts. Even as he faced the difficult after effects of cancer treatments his love for his family never wavered.
His family is deeply grateful for the care and support of Meadow Falls of Chagrin Valley, which gave him a sense of living with some of his own independence, as well as the nurses and staff at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland for their compassion and comfort in his final days.
For those who wish to express sympathy, the family suggests a donation to Reserve Care Hospice in Richard’s name.
