(AKA Rick, Dick and Shorty)
Richard C. Nelson Sr. age 73 of Uniontown passed away on August 26, 2015 at Summa Akron City Hospital, after a long battle with COPD. He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, good neighbor and a very good friend to many. He never knew a stranger.
He was born on November 23, 1941 in Whitmer West Virginia to Hallie and Forest Nelson. He resided in the Akron/Uniontown area since the age of 12. He attended schools in Whitmer and in Akron. He was employed by the University of Akron as an HVAC Technician, retiring in 1998 with 30 years of service
He was proud to have served his country in Vietnam, with the U.S. Army's 25th. Division and was a 100% disabled American Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Nelson; brother-in-law ,Jerry Whited ; three nephews, Jeffrey and Kevin Nelson and Ernest Horvath.
He leaves his wife Susan of the residence; daughter, Laura (Rodric) Paulk of Wylie, Texas; granddaughter; Megan Nelson-Paulk of Denton Texas; son Richard Jr. (Jennifer )of Uniontown; grandsons ;Trevor and Tyler Nelson of Uniontown; son Donald of Uniontown; granddaughter; Savannah Nelson of Canal Fulton; son ,Timothy (Angela) Nelson of Barberton; granddaughters; Samantha Nelson and Haley and Hannah Haldeman of Barberton; his precious great-granddaughters, "Poppy's Little Girls", Aubree and Arianna; brother ,Elwood (Doris) Nelson of Akron; sister Helen Whited of Akron; sister Patricia (Donald ) Mullenax of Whitmer, West Virginia; sister and brother-in-law Dottie and(BEST FRIEND) Joseph Guzik of Uniontown; sister Irene Tenney of Akron; many nieces, nephews, friends (especially the "Coffee Gang") and "man's best friend" the family dog, Sassy.
Richard enjoyed sports and was an avid Cleveland Indians and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He coached Little League baseball in Kenmore for many years, when his sons were playing, and umpired youth baseball games for Summit Umpires. He enjoyed yard work, home improvement projects, helping his neighbors and would try to fix almost anything. "He was a jack of all trades, master of none". He also enjoyed spending winters in Florida and visiting Disney World, the Outer Banks, Texas and Hawaii.
Visitation will be held on Saturday August 29, 2015 at 2p.m. to 4.p.m at Newcomer Funeral Home 131 N. canton Rd., Akron Ohio, 44305 , Funeral service will follow. Interment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Wounded Warrior Foundation or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
