Listen to Obituary

Richard "Dick" Bukovey, 85, of Suffield, Ohio passed away on February 21, 2026. He was born on June 26, 1940 the son of the late Paul and Tresa Bukovey. He graduated from Garfield High School where he played football, and attended the University of Akron. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Radioman Second Class, was a 60 year member of the Freemasons, National Lodge #568 and a member of the Scottish Rite.

He was a man of faith and long time member of The Chapel on Fir Hill where he sang in the choir. He was employed for 20 years with the Firestone Bank and retired after 26 years of dedicated service from the Akron Post Office. As a youth, Dick was a paperboy for the Akron Beacon Journal. Believing in the benefits of the experience he encouraged his sons and daughter to become paper carriers where he provided nuturing guidance, and help when needed.

Dick loved his children. He was active in Indian Guides, 4-H, enjoyed coaching their peewee football, baseball, girls softball, hockey, and Rainbow Girls drill teams. He also served as President of the P.T.A. He was a mentor, mechanic, and county champion coach to his grandson’s All American Soap Box Derby win. Dick was a loving and caring Foster Parent and a Big Brother. Following his love of motorcycles, which he road all his life, he was a member of the Ventura Touring Society. His hobbies included wood working, target shooting with his sons and grandsons, and weekend flying at the Goodyear Model Airplane Club.

He was the ultimate and constant cheering presence at every football game and the first to arrive at every party with a smile on his face. Whether it was a quiet family dinner or a loud celebration, Dick was there reminding us all that showing up is the greatest act of love. His legacy isn't just in the service he gave his country, but in the unwavering devotion he gave to every child and grandchild. He will be remembered for the love in his heart for God, family, country AND sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Richard P. Bukovey Starr, and sister Marilyn Murdock.

Dick is survived by the love of his life, Penny L. Bukovey, his wife of 43 years; children David J. (Joann) Bukovey, Jeff (Karly) Bukovey, Wendy (Jerry) Colbert, and Hope L. Clancy; grandchildren Hannah (Andrew) Coblentz, Lexie (Zachary) Stutzman, Alex Bukovey, Troy Bukovey, Michael (Fiancé Sierra Scott) Bukovey, Jessica Bukovey, Kameron (April) Kukasky, and Brycen (Fiancé Morgan Turner) Colbert ; great-grandchildren Liam, Silas, Vera, Niya, Kayden, and Karter; siblings Barbara (Richard) Freeman, Cheryl Herndon, Russell (Steffani) Foutty, and Mary (John) Just; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.
