Pastor OD Leonard was born to the late Elijah Leonard and Annie Leonard Austin in Rockford, Alabama on August 23,1933.
At the young age of two years old, OD lost his father Elijah. He spent his childhood with his paternal grandparents in Rockford, Alabama while his mother went up North to better their lives.
OD came to Akron, Ohio at the age of fourteen. He was a graduate of West High School. Upon graduation OD entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1957. Once his service was completed, OD found employment at B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Company. He often boasted about his days of being one of the first African American Union Stewards at B.F. Goodrich. OD was a member of the B.F. Goodrich Local No. # 5. He worked fiercely for over 30 years.
Pastor Leonard answered the call into ministry for over 30 years. He pastored at several churches in the Akron area. Pastor Leonard last served at the JOY CHURCH in Akron, Ohio.
OD was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Annie and loving stepfather, Thomas Austin; Uncle Fores Russell, Aunt Annie Pearl; and sister, LaVern Watkins.
He is survived by sons, DeGlagus (Rebecca) Bradford and Odeyus Leonard; four loving grandsons, DeGlagus (Arianna) Solomon, Tyrus Bradford, Odeyus “ODJ” Leonard, and Jayden Leonard; one great-granddaughter, Ayva Solomon; caregivers, Janie Foshee and Renee Nurse.
He is also survived by wife, Helen Leonard and stepsons, brothers Thomas Austin and Keith Austin.
