Michael Paul Shuman went home to be with the Lord on April 1, 2026 at his home in Tallmadge surrounded by friends and family. He was born on December 12, 1948 in Akron OH to Leland “Bud” & Willa “Billie” (Orr) Shuman. He graduated from Tallmadge HS in 1966 and lived most of his life in the area.
He was a Vietnam Navy Veteran who served from Feb 1967 until Jan 1971. He was retired from Kent State University where he worked in the IT Department. He held 3 degrees in very different fields. He earned his Associates in electronics, his bachelor’s in English and his Master’s in clinical mental health counseling.
He was a life-long member of the Tallmadge Congregational Church and was active with a veterans’ support group called Warrior’s Journey Home. He and his wife took a trip to Vietnam with that organization in 2014 for the purpose of facilitating healing of PTSD. He returned to Vietnam several more times after that to give away bicycles to children in the remote countryside. He was a member of the Tallmadge American Legion.
He was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had celebrated 16 years of recovery thanks to AA and to the Interval Brotherhood Home.
Mike loved to read and learn new things and enjoyed repairing things and “tinkering”. His favorite past time was driving his Bob Cat Tractor to dig holes, plow the driveway, move branches or anything else he could figure out to do with it.
He loved animals and had a quite a few at the time of his passing. His special ones were Rupert the orange cat and Tatiana the Russian tortoise.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Kathleen Addy, and a son David M. Shuman.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years Shawn Barnhart-Shuman of Tallmadge, a daughter Rosie Zeno of Columbus OH (grandkids Tori, Braden & Ashton), a son Mason Shuman (Kim) of Kent OH (grandkids Quin & Spencer), a son Kenn Shuman Kennedy (Nichole) of Chicago IL (grandkids Lennon & Hazel), grandsons Daven & Aiden Shuman of Tallmadge, a step-daughter Mary Winer of Athens OH, a sister Sandy Haines of FL, a sister Judy Langreder of Tallmadge & many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service are to be held at First Congregational Church on Heritage Dr. in Tallmadge at 10:00 am, Wednesday April 8th.
Interment to follow at Tallmadge Cemetery with military honors.
Donations to Warrior’s Journey Home Tallmadge, Alcoholics Anonymous, or the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge are appreciated in lieu of flowers.
