Marvin Odell (Sonny) Johnson, a beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend, peacefully embarked on his eternal journey on August 25, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on January 19, 1938, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, later relocating to Akron Ohio. Marvin was a man whose roots ran deep and whose life was rich with love, labor and laughter.
Marvin was the son of John and Laura Johnson, who instilled in him the values of hard work and resilience. He was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette. His siblings, Liller Hall, Johnnie Griffin, John and Joe Johnson, his sons, Marvin, Larry and Jimmy Johnson, grandchildren Rion Johnson and Latasha Rigsby.
A dedicated heavy equipment operator, Marvin was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. His career was a testament to his strong work ethic, strength and integrity, as he skillfully maneuvered machinery that shaped landscapes and communities.
Marvin’s life was enriched by his passions, he found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing, the intrigue of coin collecting and the satisfaction of building and sometimes dismantling various projects. His hobbies were a reflection of his curious nature and his love for the world around him.
A man of few words but infinite wisdom, Marvin was known for his strong will and his kind heart. He was stern when needed, but his kindness and sense of humor made him a cherished companion to all who knew him.
Marvin’s legacy lives on through his surviving children, Sandra, Kenny (Angie), Donna (Ronnie), Michele (Steve), Justin, Branden (Ashlee), Jennifer (Matt), as well as his brother Melvin (Gail). His family tree continues to bloom with 22 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 131 N Canton Rd, Akron, Ohio 44305 where a memorial service to honor Marvin’s remarkable life will be held at 1:00 p.m.
The Johnson family extends heartfelt gratitude to Summa Hospice for their compassionate care. As we face this profound loss, we find solace in the belief that those we love never truly leave us – they walk beside us every day.
In closing, they wish to leave you with scripture that embodies Marvin’s unwavering faith: “God is good; His love endures forever”(Psalm 136:1). Marvin’s love endures, echoing in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
