Kevin Laney Tolbert, born on January 2, 1955, in a spirited celebration of life and creativity, passed away on February 7, 2026. Renowned as an exceptional professional drummer, Kevin's musical talents extended beyond performance; he crafted his own drums and was notoriously inventive and creative in all his pursuits. He left a legacy of handcrafted items, including speakers and intricately carved furniture, such as a unique hand-carved table fashioned without any screws. His passion for craftsmanship also revealed itself in the creation of a specialized car for his beloved wife, Sylvia, allowing them to travel comfortably together.
Kevin and Sylvia were partners in life and adventure, sharing countless memories across the United States. They greatly enjoyed traveling, creating enduring memories in California and residing in Arizona for a decade, as well as exploring Texas, Georgia, and Florida. Their adventures even led them to the majestic Grand Canyon, where they savored the beauty of nature. Their mode of travel often involved living in a camper, reinforcing their dedication to experiencing life on the road together.
Beyond his artistic talents, Kevin was a culinary enthusiast, known for his exceptional barbecuing skills and his unique recipe for peanut coffee. His ability to rebuild an entire car engine solely by studying its manual demonstrated his determination and resourcefulness—traits that defined much of his life.
Kevin was a loving husband and is survived by his wife, Sylvia Tolbert. The family includes his sister-in-law, Geraldine Smith; sister-in-law, Sharon (Marvin) Brown; sister-in-law, Arlene (Leon) Matthews; brother-in-law, Harold Ellis; and brother-in-law, Terry Thompson. He is also survived by countless nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He joins in eternal rest with his father, William (Doris) Tolbert; brother-in-law, Isiah Ellis; brother-in-law, John Ellis; sister-in-law, Marilyn Thompson; sister-in-law, Mamie Ellis; sister-in-law, Yvonne Walker; brother-in-law, Paul Ellis; and sister-in-law, Dianne Porter, who all preceded him in death.
Kevin's spirit will always resonate in the hearts of those who knew him, marked by his creativity, love for music, and deep devotion to family and friends, including his cherished friends Rickie Fletcher and Byron Williams. His legacy will continue to inspire those who appreciate the true essence of craftsmanship and the joyous celebration of life.
