Joseph Yost, 73, passed away on August 13, 2026 in Akron, Ohio, following a battle with dementia. Born on February 5, 1953, in Akron, Ohio, to William and Jacqualine Yost, Joe dedicated his life to his wife Patty, to being an educator, to being a football coach, and to his loved ones, especially his four brothers.
A proud graduate of The University of Akron, Joe built a distinguished career with the Akron Public School system as a teacher at Ellet High School for 42 years. Joe was a successful and respected football coach at Ellet High School for his entire teaching career, having all of his brothers on the field or in the press box helping with stats, coaching, films, and cheering him on. Joe was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame, the Ellet High School Football Hall of Fame, and the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Joe's football record as a head coach was 234-152-2, the most wins in the Akron Public Schools. Joe was honored by having the Ellet High School football stadium named after him in November of 2019.
Joe was a deeply devoted husband to his late wife, Patty. Following her diagnosis of MSA in 2014, he lovingly served as her primary caregiver until her passing in 2016.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Patty Yost, his parents, William and Jackie Yost, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and John McKosky. He is survived by his brothers, Jim Yost, Gary (Tobi) Yost, Randy Yost, and Bob (Trisha) Yost; his brother-in-law, John (Claudia) McKosky; his aunt, Janet Carpenter; and his close friend Tina Wallace. Joe is also survived by his dear friend, Dave Bond, who he has known since grade school. Joe is fondly remembered by many loving cousins, fellow coaches, football players, students and friends.
