Joseph L. Hunter, Jr., 71, of Akron, went home to be with the Lord on September 18, 2014 after a fierce battle with cancer. He was born in Manhattan, New York on October 25, 1942. Joe was a devoted family man who always made his loved ones his top priority in life. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam. Joe spent many years working at Weirton Steel and Conrail.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Hunter, Sr., brothers, James and John Hunter and grandson, Christian Kane. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Barb Hunter, mother, Johanna Hunter, Daughters; Toni (Michael) Heslin, Kimberly Ann (Michael) Long and Jodi Lynn Hunter and Sister, Jessica Hunter. He was 'Pa Joe' to his 9 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren. He was also an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Monday, September 22, 2014 from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Road, in Akron. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 11:00 am at the First Church of God, 464 Northeast Ave in Tallmadge with Pastor Josh Deeter officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Cooper Cancer Center, Summa Foundation, 525 E. Market St, Akron, OH 44304.
