Joseph A. Tomei
Joseph A. Tomei, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, November 30, 2015. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence; and mother, Rose; his wife, Lena; and two brothers and spouse, John and Victor (Daisy), sister, Angelina; and granddaughter, Alexis Gramley.
He is survived by brother, Fred (Louise), sister in-law, Katie; and brother in-law, Armando. Joe was a WWII Army Veteran and served in the Pacific Theater from 1941-1945 attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat in the Philippine Islands. All four brothers returned to Akron after the war. He was a proud employee of National Rubber Machinery for 42 years, retiring in 1981. He was an avid golfer for most of his life.
Joe was the patriarch of the Tomei family, alongside his wife of 55 years. Together they loved their 3 children and their spouses, Lawrence (Joan), Joseph (Joyce), and Patricia (Jeff) Gramley; grandchildren, Bethany (John), Melissa (Rob), Laura (Sal), Kristen (Paul), Marc (Krystle), Michael (Michelle), Ashley (Louie) and Alexis; and 10 great-grandchildren. Family would like to give special thanks to GreenView Senior Assisted Living and Crossroads Hospice.
Calling hours will be at Newcomer Funeral Home 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305 Friday Dec. 4, 2015 from 4-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday Dec. 5, 2015 at 10am at St. Anthony Church 83 Mosser PL. Akron, OH 44310. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Purple Heart Foundation.
