John D Tobias

March 26, 1933 — December 11, 2022

John David Tobias, born in Akron, Ohio on March 26, 1933 passed away on December 11, 2022 at Gentlebrook Nursing Home where he had been cared for in recent years. John was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Donna, his parents Paul and Emily Tobias and six of his eleven siblings.

John served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps (1953-55) and upon return lived in Indianapolis, Indiana with Donna and their two young sons where he began his career as a photoengraver. In 1964, the family moved back to the Akron area where John worked and retired from the Akron Beacon Journal. In addition to his primary vocation, John drove school bus, primarily for the Springfield Local School District, where he enjoyed his bus garage friends and the students he transported. In his free time, John was a fan of cars, owning various models, and kept them pristine by washing and waxing every Saturday. He loved following the Cleveland Indians and was passionate about fishing with family and friends through the years, vacationing many summers at Sharbot Lake in Canada. John and Donna also enjoyed cruises and other trips with their children and grandchildren, creating great lasting memories for all he left behind.

John is survived by: his brother Galen (Peggy), sisters Jeannie, Beverly (Ron) and Janet; Sons Rick (Peggy) Mike (Kathy) and their children Jody (Kevin), Katie (Ryan), Stephanie (Joshua), Sarah (Kyle) and Rachel (Ryan); great grandchildren Connor, Molly, Ava, Mya, Pierce and Demetrius. John also has many remaining nephews, nieces and other family and friends that will miss him greatly.

John's family would like to extend gratitude to the Gentlebrook Memory Care Unit and Absolute Hospice for their exceptional care. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Eastwood Church of the Brethren in Akron, Ohio where John was a lifelong member with Visitation 11:00am-12:00pm and Service at 12:00pm, Pastor Cindy Peel officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eastwood Church of the Brethren.
