John Franklin Szwejk, born August 23, 1947, in Akron, OH, passed away on July 11, 2026. Over the span of seventy-eight years, John led a remarkable life defined by service, devotion, and kindness, leaving an enduring legacy for those privileged to know him.

A proud US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, John served his country with honor and distinction. His military service was marked by the awarding of several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, and the Army Commendation Medal. His pride and dedication to the military never wavered, and he maintained a lifelong respect for the values instilled in him during his years of service.

John was, above all, a family man. Married to his beloved wife, Helen, for sixty years, their relationship stood as a beacon of loyalty and love. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Devon Wehrlin and Katrina Wolford, both of whom he cherished deeply. His kindness extended to all who knew him, and he became a father figure to many—always approachable, always ready to listen or offer advice.

His niece, Jenny Caddy, also survives him, along with those he will be missed by: Megan, Kristina, Jenny, Jack, and Riley. These individuals, along with countless friends and loved ones, feel the profound loss of John’s gentle guidance and warmth.

John's interests were many, and he lived life fully. An avid fisherman, he treasured quiet moments by the water including the beach. He enjoyed the camaraderie and fun of playing cards, the excitement of gambling, and the thrill of slot machines. His family lovingly recalls his fondness for Western movies and his appreciation for a good martini. Through these passions, he brought joy and laughter into the lives of those around him.

Preceding John in death are his father, John Szwejk; his mother, Agnes Szwejk; his brother, Ray Szwejk; and his sister, Kathy Heckaman. Their memory, intertwined with his own, will be lovingly remembered by all who grieve his passing.

John’s love for his family was unwavering, and his presence provided strength and reassurance. He leaves behind not only a family who adored him but a community enriched by his generosity, humor, strength of character, moral integrity, and rememberance.

John Franklin Szwejk’s legacy will continue in the stories shared, the traditions kept, and the love that persists. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
