John Stephen Marcum

September 2, 1955 – July 22, 2026

John Stephen Marcum, of Akron Ohio, passed away on July 22, 2026, after a brief bout with cancer. John was born September 2, 1955 to Willie H. Marcum and Rita Shiplett Marcum. John grew up, and spent most of his life, in Akron where he attended St. John the Baptist grade school, and later attended Central Hower High School.

John was one of four siblings. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Rita, his brother, Rick Marcum, and his sister, Kathleen Marcum McGee. John leaves behind his beloved brother, Dale Marcum (Linda) of Akron, OH, and many cousins and lifelong friends.

John traveled frequently to visit places, experiences, and people he loved. Washington, DC, and presidential libraries were favorite travel destinations. He loved to read, and often quoted his favorite poet – Emily Dickenson. Visiting her home in Massachusetts was one of his favorite travel memories. In his final days he passed on to family what he jokingly called his “life’s literary works”, binders of years of his own original poetry and prose.

Those closest to him will remember his love of Archie Comics; his passion for food; his sarcastic, dry wit; and his love for the Three Stooges and reality TV. He should also be remembered for his dedication to the Christian Children’s Fund, which he supported for decades through monthly donations, treasuring the letters and drawings he received from children around the world who benefited from his donations.

John’s final months were spent in the care of Grace House, Akron – a nonprofit providing compassionate end of life care for those with little means - whose caregivers and volunteers, in coordination with Summa Hospice, gave John a level of comfort, care and security that cannot be measured. He found comfort in his final days knowing he would finally be with his mother, and best friend, Rita.

Per John’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A private burial of John’s ashes will take place at a later date.
