John Ash Hargrove, affectionately known as Chick, was born on March 2, 1950, in Duncanville, Alabama. He passed away peacefully February 17, 2026.
John later moved to Boston, Massachusetts and was raised by his Aunt Vera after the passing of his mother. However, he always considered Duncanville home. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1971. John was a proud soldier, and his service was a source of deep honor to him.
John was a nomadic soul; he also lived in Detroit, Michigan and Akron, Ohio. He had a love for reading and learning and could often be found immersed in a good book. John enjoyed the outdoors and could be found quietly sitting outside taking in the fresh air and pondering life.
John was preceded in death by his siblings: Tom Mason, Joe Mason, Queen Lewis, Frances Nevins, and Inez Hardee.
He leaves to mourn his passing his sisters, Mattie Johnson (Akron, Ohio) and Shirley Johnson (Raleigh, North Carolina), aunt, Lottie Ball (Worcester, Massachusetts) along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will cherish his memory.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Alberth House (Craig and Zee Langworthy), his nurses, Taylor Smith and Nicole McCoy of Copley Health, and Cleveland Clinic Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
John will be remembered for his service, his love of learning, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life.
