John Dennis Stover, Sr. "Smokey"
John Dennis Stover, Sr., 92, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2014. John was born May 25, 1922 in Gilmer County, Georgia. He was a cherished, down-home soul who quietly loved his family and friends. He was strong in his faith and enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, fishing, Hartville Flea Market, yard sales, and showing a few special tricks to all he met.
He was a member of the Greatest Generation and our hero who served in the Army at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, HI during the WWII attack on Pearl Harbor where he shot at low flying enemy planes with only a pistol and continued to defend the island in the aftermath. John went on to serve courageously in the war for another 3 years in Australia, Leyte Island, New Guinea and the Philippines.
After the war, John went home to Georgia where he met and married the love of his life, Freda Lee Russell. Moving to Akron in 1952 to work in the booming rubber industry, John retired from Firestone after 29 years of service and enjoyed an amazing 33 year retirement.
