In Loving Memory of James David "JD" Smith Jr.
James David Smith Jr., known affectionately as "JD" to his many friends (and sometimes Smitty), passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 11th following a brief illness.
A Life of Service and Adventure
JD proudly served his country with years of service in the United States Army and the Ohio Army National Guard. In his civilian life, he had a long and dedicated career working for the Ford Motor Company at the Waldon Hills plant.
A voracious reader and avid history enthusiast, JD had a particular passion for military history. He was one of the early members of the international Military Vehicle
Preservation Association and found great joy in restoring vintage military equipment with his friends and family. Generous with his time and expertise, he was a go-to resource for vehicle restoration and was always ready to help friends with their projects.
Beyond military history, JD loved model railroading—a passion he passed down to his son, Chris, from an early age. In recent years, the two shared many fond memories attending train shows and historical railroad events together. Family vacations often involved traveling and camping, with a special emphasis on visiting historical landmarks and Civil War battlefields. More recently, he and his wife Barb enjoyed spending their time traveling to military vehicle shows and sharing activities with their loved ones.
Remembering JD
JD will be remembered for his fantastic sense of humor, his active spirit, and his boundless willingness to help others. Neighbors and friends knew that all they had to do was ask, and JD would be there to lend a hand—whether it meant repairing a car, moving heavy furniture, or simply sharing a lazy afternoon of fishing. Even in his final years, he remained active and was always in the mood for an adventure.
