James L. Benedum, 83, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on June 14, 2026.
Born on March 27, 1943, he was the son of the late Leon and Lois Benedum. James was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family and serving his community. He owned and operated Benedum's Gulf Service Station before driving truck for Priority Trucking and eventually joining Sunny Hills Golf Course, where he spent many, many years working and golfing before ultimately retiring as Superintendent. Golf and baseball were among James's greatest passions. They brought him countless friendships, memories, and accomplishments throughout his life. He could often be found at the golf course fertilizing the greens, cutting the fairways, watering at night, or enjoying a round of golf—often barefoot. He was also a devoted Cleveland sports fan. Beyond his own love of sports, James enjoyed teaching all the neighborhood kids whatever sport was in season and welcomed them to spend summer days swimming in the family pool. Whether at the golf course, around the neighborhood, or at the ballfield, he was always willing to offer advice, encouragement, and life lessons that often reached far beyond the game itself. His generosity, patience, and enthusiasm created lasting memories for all the neighborhood kids and their families. Above all else, James's greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 50 years, Carol L. Benedum; and his siblings George, Patty, and Donald Benedum.
James is survived by his loving children, Sherman L. Benedum and Shannon (Michael) LaMarca; grandchildren Angelo LaMarca, Dylan Benedum, Marissa (Nicholas) Skye, Mitchel Markusic, Abigail (John) LaMarca, and James LaMarca; brothers Larry Benedum and Tim Benedum; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Per James's wishes, cremation will take place.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sunny Hills Golf Course. Details will be announced at a later date.
