Gertrude L. Humbert (nee Starkey)
Gertrude L. Humbert "Gertie", 87, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2015. She was born on May 22, 1927 in Akron, Ohio to the late Homer and Frankie Starkey. She lived her entire life in Akron, graduating from East High School in 1945. Gertie was married 51 years to her husband, Carl "Corky", whom she met while working at Summit Beach Park. She also worked at General Tire and O'Neil's for many years. In her free time, Gertie enjoyed bingo, game shows, puzzle books, and playing the lottery. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a very caring person who always put her family first.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl O. Humbert in 1999; parents, Homer and Frankie Starkey; and sisters, Eloise Waller and Virginia Avara. She is survived by her brother Homer (Faye) Starkey; her children Sandra White, Gail (Lou) Schilling, Eugene (Karen) Humbert, and Karen (Kevin) George; her grandchildren, Shari (Mike) Helton, Ronald (Susan) Adamov, Shauna (Michael) Azar, Carla (John) Steedley, Jason Humbert, Kimberly (Richard) Milford, Cassandra George, Billy Thomas, Brian (Kara) George, Michelle (James) Myers, Andrew George; 5 step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Brandy. She also leaves many special nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Absolute Hospice, Hoover Campus, 339 E. Maple St Suite 100, N. Canton, OH 44720.
