Gerald P. Wandel, a beloved husband, father, and cherished friend to many, passed away on June 30, 2025, in Akron, Ohio. Born on May 22, 1937, Gerald lived a life rich with purpose, laughter, and the unique talents that made him an unforgettable figure to those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memory that will endure through the ages.
A dedicated man, Gerald devoted most of his professional life to Goodyear Aerospace, where he played a key role in defense systems until his retirement. His commitment to excellence in his career was matched only by his reputation as a master craftsman. Known affectionately as the “handiest guy in the world” and the original “gerry rigger,” he possessed an extraordinary ability to fix anything that came his way. His resourcefulness transformed everyday challenges into opportunities for ingenuity and creativity.
Education played a significant role in his life as well. Gerald attended Kent State University, where the foundations of his knowledge would serve him well in both his career and personal endeavors. His wisdom and skills were further complemented by a zest for life that was evident in his many passions, from chasing the perfect swing on the golf course to the serene joys of camping at West Branch. The outdoors called to him, whispering adventures that he readily embraced.
Family was everything to Gerald. He is survived by his loving wife, Kaye, and his children: Chris (Shellee) Wandel, Deanne Angel, and Brian (Peggy) Thomas. The warmth he fostered within his family radiated outward, reaching his grandchildren and great-granddaughter, who will recall his gentle spirit and playful nature. Gerald always prayed for his family and everyone else, demonstrating his selflessness and the profound love he held for others and for God, his Savior.
Though his journey through life was inspirational, Gerald also faced sorrow with grace—he is preceded in death by his father and mother Pierre and Mary Wandel, and his son Doug Wandel. Their absence leaves a poignant reminder of the bonds of love that unite them; his memory will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life honoring Gerald P. Wandel will take place on July 18, 2025, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Hudson, Ohio. Friends and family are invited to gather and reflect on his remarkable life at 2:00 PM, intertwining stories, laughter, and the shared warmth that marks such an occasion.
