Gerald Robert Lockard (Jerry), 91, heard the Master's call, broke the chains of Parkinson's Disease which had incapacitated him for the past 3 years, and returned to the arms of his Creator in the early morning hours of May 26, 2025 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
Jerry was born in Akron, OH on March 17, 1934 to the late Gerald John Lockard and Lillian M. (Rorabaugh) Lockard. He was also predeceased by his son Jeffrey Alan, grandson Christopher, sister Sandra Foster, father and mother-in-law George K. and Marion W. Wells, brother in law Harold G. Wells.
He is survived by his wife of 63+ years Mabel J. (Wells) Lockard, sons Jonathan E. (Maria) Lockard of Munroe Falls, OH and David P. Lockard of Hampton, VA, grandchildren Ryan M. and Kerri, as well as great-granddaughter Brooklynn. Brother-in-law Wes Foster and nephew Gerald Foster.
Jerry was a Master Carpenter by trade having completed two apprenticeships. He has built many homes and cabinets for kitchens, furniture, a playhouse for the kids, and was also a Mr. Fix-it for the neighbors. In 1983 he left his carpentry company to be employed by the University of Akron where he managed their carpenter shop for 18 years until his retirement. He then discovered his "green thumb" and filled the lot beside his home with a HUGE vegetable garden, planted a 33 rose bushes garden, and discovered woodcarving. Those who knew Jerry know there was never a piece of wood he didn't love and kept it for future use. He was awarded many Keep Akron Beautiful certificates for his landscaping, enjoyed sharing his vegetables with his neighbors, and carved beautiful things from his wood collections.
Jerry was a 50+ year member of The Chapel and served as an usher, deacon, and part-time helper when his wife called for help in the Nursery. He also built consoles for the church's audio room and repaired and rebuilt many of the buildings at Camp Carl. He more recently attended services at Chapel Hill Church which was closer to his home.
A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at a later date.
