Gerald "Jerry" Matthews, 74, of Akron, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012. He was born in Lemont Furnace, PA on September 14, 1938 to the late Virgil and Beatrice (Cassidy) Matthews.
Jerry attended school in Pittsburg, PA and graduated from West High School in Cleveland. Jerry went on to serve our country in the Marine Corps.
Jerry retired from H&M Management after 17 years. He loved gardening and wood working. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Akron.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, of 22 years.
Survivors include his sister, Ellen Velkey of North Olmstead; daughter, Bev (Ric) Haury and son, John (Judy) O'Neil of Stow; grandchildren, John Thomas (Maria), Jim, Ryan, and David O'Neil, and Meghan Haury; great- granddaughter, Alayna O'Neil; many nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Marsha Winkowski of Berea; and his puppy, Daisy Mae.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, November 20, 5-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Funeral Mass, Wednesday, November 21, 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 433 Mission Dr., Akron with Father Ralph Thomas presiding. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
