On February 16, George D. Pouliot, 82, stepped from this earthly life into the presence of his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family.
Born December 11, 1943, in Akron, Ohio, to Leo and Frances Pouliot, George lived a life marked by faith, integrity, discipline, and devotion to family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Georgia (Scourbouti); and his brother, John. He is survived by his brothers Mark (Terri) and Rory; and his sisters Joan Smith, Ann Mary Cox, and Rita (Bill) Abbey.
At just 17 years old, George enlisted in the United States Navy. He often said it was the best thing that could have happened to him, as it shaped his character and instilled in him a deep respect for authority and personal discipline. He proudly served four years aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier.
During a port stop in Quebec City, Canada, he met his late wife Georgia (Scourbouti). It was love at first sight. Though military service kept them apart at times, their devotion never wavered, and they were married in her parents’ home. They later settled in the Akron area, where George began a long career as a long-distance truck driver with Consolidated Freightways. Along the way, he formed many lasting friendships, and many who knew him came to appreciate the steady faith in Christ that guided his life.
George and Georgia were blessed with three sons: Leo (Kim), Anthony (Andrea), and John (Amy). He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
After Georgia’s passing, George later met Sylvia at a monthly seniors dance. Discovering their shared love for the Lord and many common interests, they married a year later. Through this union, George welcomed her three sons—Greg (Molly), Keith (Shari), and Scott (Jodi)—as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren into his life.
Though he had spent years traveling the seas and highways, George found his greatest happiness in simple pleasures. He would quickly decline any offer of a pleasure cruise, saying he had all the cruises he ever wanted. Instead, he found joy riding his zero-turn mower, caring not only for his own lawn but often for neighbors’ as well. Nearly daily lunches with his brother Mark were another cherished routine.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Summa Palliative Care in Akron and the Hospice Care Team for their compassionate care. Special gratitude is also given to retired Pastor Bruce Chouinard, Pastor Jonathan Cameron, Associate Pastor Mike Rutan, and Jordan Aho for their prayers, encouragement, and faithful support. George’s wish was to be at home at the end of his life, and that wish was lovingly fulfilled through the devoted care of his family.
Following cremation, George will be laid to rest at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Parkside Kent, 5915 Rhodes Rd. Kent, OH 44240. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory are suggested to Parkside Kent, or Shepherd's House.
