George Carruthers Sr.
George Carruthers, Sr., 98, of Akron, passed away June 21, 2014. He was born in Lilly, Pennsylvania on July 9, 1915 to the late Thomas and Mae Carruthers. George proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a guard at a POW camp in Texas. He retired from Dave Towell Cadillac after 35 years of employment. George was a member of the former Main Street United Methodist Church. In his free time, he loved fishing and camping with family at Schultz Lake in Atwater.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his siblings, Janet, Mary, Agnes, Virginia, John, James, Art, and Thomas.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 74 years, Annabelle; son, George Carruthers, Jr.; brother, Jack (Helen) Carruthers; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jim Ritz.
Visitation will be Monday, June 23 from 5-7 followed by a 7:00 p.m. funeral service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
