Gary A. Willison, 78, of Springfield Township, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. Gary was born on April 5, 1948 in Akron, Ohio to Arthur and Dorothy Willison. Gary grew up in the Village of Lakemore, OH. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1966 and from Kent State University in 1971 with a degree in Mathematics.
Gary taught at Schrop School and Springfield High School. He coached several sports. A highlight of “Coach Willi’s” was serving as assistant and head coach for the Springfield High School girls softball team and seeing the team win multiple State championships. In retirement, Gary enjoyed meeting regularly with many of his friends from teaching and the community. He was a member of the Jednota Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Gary was an avid sports fan. He loved to watch college sports and was a huge Cleveland Indians fan. He enjoyed golf and was active in a local league. Gary did enjoy his early country and blue grass music.
As well as his friendships, family was important to Gary. He spoke fondly of visits to southern Ohio and the traditions of family reunions and ice cream making with the extended family. Gary began new traditions. He made yearly fishing trips to Canada with his brother and other friends. In August he would host an annual fish fry at his house using fish from the previous year’s catch. His garden included the lima bean tradition his father began.
Gary is survived by his brother Boyd (Connie) Willison of Springfield Township, OH, his sister Karen (William) Grant of Sebring, OH, and first cousin Shila Bettinger. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
