Frederick I. Metzler Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on May 9, 2025, in Akron, Ohio. He was born on April 10, 1937, in Akron, where he spent his cherished life.
Fred dedicated a significant portion of his career to Ohio Edison, where he served as a foreman and lineman until his retirement in 1996. His commitment to service extended beyond his primary role; he also worked diligently at the Akron Auto Auction for 16 years, contributing his strong work ethic and dedication to the tasks at hand. Fred's leadership was recognized during his tenure as the secretary of the Utility Workers Union of America, Local 126, where his integrity and commitment to his colleagues shone through.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Fred often described him with the highest regard. He was a man whose kindness knew no bounds—an individual who was truly like a saint. Friends and family alike remembered him as the nicest man ever, someone who never could get angry and who helped anyone in need. His warmth and compassion were hallmarks of his character.
Fred had a well-known affinity for simple pleasures: he loved his favorite chair and the comfort of his television. In addition to these calming pastimes, he enjoyed golfing, skiing, and bowling, making memories that would last a lifetime with those close to him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Priscella; sons Fred Metzler III, Troy Metzler, and Travis (Jamie) Terrell; and daughter Denise (Greg) Chenervert. His legacy continues through his cherished grandsons, Cody Chenervert (Jason Thompson), Anthony, Chris, Nick, Colton, and Christian Terrell, as well as Ian Carson. Fred also leaves behind granddaughters Anissa (Darius) Mimms and Tori Terrell, Nya Terrell, Alexis Terrell and Maddy Smith. He is survived by his sister-in-law Grace Metzler, and nieces Pam Yost and husband John Sobinovsky, Jenae (Rom) Caniglia, and Leanne (Scott) Beavers.
Fred's memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred I. Sr. and Margaret Metzler; son Derrick Terrell; brother Jay Metzler; and nephew David E. Clark.
The family has special appreciation for Hospice Nurses Jen Hutcherson, Ray Linger, Jordan Crail who took such good care of Fred; as well as, caregiver Norma J. Lewis because they both loved talking, snacking and she kept Fred laughing. They watched football and cooking shows together.
Visitation will be Friday May 16th from 10:30-11:30 AM at the Newcomer Funeral Home. A procession departs the funeral home to arrive at Hillside Memorial Park at 12 noon for services at the mausoleum.
