Francis Sydney "Bud" Canterbury

Francis Sydney “Bud” Canterbury, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on December 31, 2025, in Hudson, Ohio. Bud was born on July 25, 1937, in Wolf Creek, West Virginia, to the late John William Canterbury and Ruth Greene Canterbury. He graduated from Union High School in 1955 and moved from Wolf Creek in the late 1950s, eventually settling in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Bud dedicated 30 years of service to Lawson’s Milk Company before completing his career at The University of Akron, where he served as HVAC Manager until his retirement in 2000. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserves for six years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant upon discharge. Bud was also a 32nd-Degree Mason and a member of the Portage Lakes Lodge. Outside of work, Bud had a lifelong love of golf, spending more than 30 years playing in the old Lawson’s Golf League. He especially treasured the time spent golfing with his two sons. In the early 1970s, Bud also enjoyed auctioneering. He delighted in sharing stories from his childhood on the family farm, particularly tales about his two favorite mules-stories that never failed to bring laughter and warmth to those around him.

Bud is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Catherine Charlotte Canterbury, and their three children: Annette Burns (Mike), Jim Canterbury (Adelia), and Marc Canterbury (Kim). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Lizzie, Allie (Nick), Gus, Magnus, Emma, Abby, and Shaniya, and a cherished great-grandfather to Huck, who brought him immense joy. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Canterbury, and his siblings: Josie, Beulah, Bob, John, Mae, Virginia, and Franklin.

Bud will be remembered for his deep love of family, integrity, strong work ethic, reliability, and warm personality. He found joy in both his work and the simple pleasures of life, leaving a lasting impression on coworkers and friends alike.

Funeral Service: Thursday, 1/15/2026 at 5 PM, Newcomer Funeral Home. Burial: Rosewood Cemetery, 1754 North Jefferson Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901 will take place Friday, 1/16/2026 at 3PM.
