Ernest Quinney, affectionately known to many as "Sonny," left this world on September 14, 2025, in Akron, Ohio, at the age of 88. Born on April 11, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama, Ernest lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and passion for sports.
A proud graduate of East High School in Akron, he garnered remarkable recognition as a football player, earning accolades such as all city, all state, and little all American. His athletic prowess not only showcased his remarkable talent but also laid the foundation for a character built on determination and competitiveness. After his high school years, Ernest continued his education at Kent State, further enriching his knowledge and skills.
Professionally, Ernest was a dedicated employee in Highway Maintenance for the City of Akron. Throughout his career, he epitomized the qualities of a diligent worker—consistently striving for excellence, supporting his colleagues, and ensuring the safety and maintenance of the community’s roadways.
Ernest's contributions extended well beyond his professional endeavors. He was a loving family man, deeply devoted to his wife of 67 years, Shirley, with whom he shared countless adventures, including a shared love for traveling.
He is survived by his beloved wife, his son Gregory (Diane) Quinney, and his cherished siblings: Bernice (Arthur) Buck, Sherry (Leon) Perry, Henrietta Armour, and Sarah Steadman. Ernest’s life was further enriched by the love of his many nieces and nephews, who will forever remember the warmth and joy he brought to their lives. His friendships were equally treasured, particularly those he forged with Al Hamilton, Crystal Terrell, Drucella Sistrunk, Carol and Jesse Osborne, and Tommy Hilliard—each sharing in the laughter and camaraderie that defined their relationship.
Ernest joins his parents, Francis and Morris Quinney, as well as his deceased brother Charles Mitchell Quinney and sister Mary in eternal rest. Their memories live on through the love and stories shared by all who knew him.
A graveside service honoring Ernest Quinney's life will take place on September 26, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM at Mt. Peace Cemetery, located at 183 Aqueduct St, Akron, Ohio, 44303.
In remembering Sonny, we celebrate a life marked by love, hard work, and an unyielding spirit that brought joy to his family and friends. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
