Elaine C. Finney, age 72, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born on December 24, 1952, in Akron, she was the daughter of Metzsker Delbert Wilson and Gertrude W. Mathews, and stepdaughter of the late Armand Fatica.
Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, James "Jimmie" Finney; her parents; and her sisters, Joyce Coburn and Katrina Lorenco.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Carol Finney; grandchildren, Adam Phelps, Samantha Finney, and Christian Finney; her siblings Gerald (Linda) Bishop, Connie (Doug) Mueller, Christine (James) Cooper, and Lisa (Mark) Fatica; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Elaine lived a full and joyful life rooted in love, creativity, and service. After retiring from the Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board, she spent her retirement traveling with her husband Jimmie and giving back to her community in countless ways.
A passionate quilter, teacher, and community organizer, Elaine founded and led several quilting groups, including Stitching at the Summit, which united people of all ages through creativity and fellowship; Piece by Peace Quilters, which blended quilting with Bible study; and Trudy’s Tuesday Quilting Class, continuing the tradition begun by her mother. She also founded and managed the food pantry at Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church and served on the Residents of Goodyear Heights Together Committee (R.I.G.H.T.).
Elaine was a longtime active member of Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church, where she poured her heart into service and outreach. She led a group of dedicated women in creating and sending over 200 handmade dresses to girls in the Ibumba village in Africa, a mission that brought joy and dignity to young lives and reflected Elaine’s deep compassion and global spirit.
Elaine’s legacy is one of generosity, kindness, and heartfelt devotion to her family, friends, church, and community. Her deep love for her late husband Jimmie, with whom she shared a lifetime of adventure, was evident to all who knew her.
A visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m., at Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church, 1430 Goodyear Blvd, Akron, Ohio 44305.
