Edward "Ed" Dipold, 69, of Akron, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 9, 2024.
Ed was born on February 1, 1955, in Salzburg, Austria. After high school, he served as a Senior Airman in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1979, specializing in automatic flight control systems.
For over 30 years, Ed worked as a network engineer at The University of Akron and as an athletic event assistant for the Zips football team. He loved his job and cherished his co-workers. One of his proudest accomplishments was contributing to the campus-wide transformation to wireless internet in 2001.
Ed was a friend to everyone he met. He was a brilliant man, always willing to share his knowledge, and you could learn something new every time you spoke with him. He had a talent for fixing anything and had a passion for science fiction, building bicycles, tinkering with electronics, rock and roll music, Harley motorcycles, and classic cars. He also cherished his time with his favorite neighbors, Marlon and Marco. Fondly known as "Papa Mustache," Ed will be deeply missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
My grandfather was the most patient, brilliant, gentle, simple, loving man, and my greatest childhood memories are with him. I am absolutely heartbroken that he is no longer with us but I take comfort in knowing that he is finally reunited with the love of his life, my grandmother.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mathilde "Hilda" and Heinrich Dipold; his beloved wife, Patricia Dipold; his sister, Herta Sheeler; and his puggle, Brutus. He is survived by his siblings, Monica Wells and Henry Dipold; grandchildren, Brittany Plank and Christopher Stahler; great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Cameron, Kai, and Korbin; and niece and nephews, Christopher Dipold, Stephanie Dipold, Timothy Sheeler, Brandon Wells, and Justin Wells.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, his 70th birthday, at Newcomer Funeral Home (131 North Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44305). Friends and family may visit from 11am until 12pm. Military honors will take place right before the service begins at 12pm. At a future date, he will be laid to rest with his wife at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery (10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio 44273).
