Edith Prater, born on August 5, 1936, in Greasy Creek, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2025, in Lakemore, Ohio, just one day shy of her 89th birthday.
Edith was the first of 16 children and learned the value of responsibility early in life by helping Granny care for her siblings. This foundation fostered a nurturing spirit that made her an awesome mother.
Edith married her beloved husband, Charles E. Prater, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years until his passing in 2013. Together, they raised seven children. Edith cherished her role as a mother and later became a proud grandmother, having 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, filling her life with love and joy.
Edith had a wide range of interests. She loved baseball and was especially fond of the Cleveland Guardians. She also enjoyed softball, horses, birds, and flowers also brought her great happiness. Her family fondly remembers her stopping to get flowers wherever she went.
Edith is survived by her children, Cindy (Carl) Ford, Bessie Hopkins, Troy (Shawn), David (Aleta), and Mike (Shelly); sons-in-law, Paul Ward and Mark Oliver; sisters, Kathleen, Pat and Loretta; brothers, Franklin, William, John and David; as well as her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Creasie (Hopkins) Kendrick; her husband, Charles; daughters, Connie Ward and Maggie Oliver; son-in-law, Hibbie Hopkins; and five sisters, three brothers, one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invtied to visit at Newcomer Funeral Home (131 N Canton Rd, Akron, Ohio 44305) on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM.
Edith Prater will be remembered for her warm heart, her commitment to family, and the countless lives she touched throughout her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, bravery, and kindness that will endure through her family.
