Dorothy (Schellin) Benko, 97, passed away peacefully December 21, 2013 at the Greenview Inn in Green, Ohio, surrounded by family and friends. She was born September 29, 1916 in Akron, Ohio. Dorothy worked at BF Goodrich prior to the war, where she met and married Rudy Benko. She continued working at Goodrich while Rudy served overseas for three years during WWII.
After many years as a housewife, Dorothy pursued a lifelong dream to go to college (Akron University) and became a teacher. She began her teaching career in 1959 and taught fifth grade at Milroy Elementary School in Springfield Twp, Ohio. After retirement, she and Rudy moved to Carpenteria, California in 1977, living close to her son, Fred Benko and family. Together, Dorothy and Rudy made many great memories and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by parents Fred (Gertrude) Schellin and Mary (Egert) Schellin, husband Rudy Benko, son Fred Benko, daughter-in-law Patty Benko. She is survived by daughters Kathy (Keith) Trares and Diane (David) Morgan of Akron, sister Mary (Schellin) Diener of San Diego, CA, daughter-in-law Hiroko Benko of Santa Barbara, CA, grandchildren; Matthew (Denise) Benko, Dody (Brett) Livingston, Andrew Cacioppo, Nicole (David) Dinan, Zachary Morgan and Lauren Morgan and eight great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
