Donald Blaine “Don” Adey, age 95, a cherished educator, dedicated coach, and beloved family man, was born on June 15, 1930, in Akron, Ohio. He passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on January 29, 2026, in Baltimore, Ohio. He leaves behind a legacy of passion, humor, and commitment to the lives he touched through his teaching and coaching.
Donald spent a significant part of his career at Springfield High School where he not only taught but also made a lasting impact as a basketball coach for ten years. His exceptional leadership earned him the honor of being named Summit County Coach of the Year in 1970. Additionally, he served as the head coach at Manchester High School for two years. His contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Greater Akron Boys’ Basketball Coaches Association in 1993, followed by his induction into the Springfield High School Hall of Fame in the same year.
A proud graduate of The University of Akron in 1956, Donald showcased his athletic talent by playing varsity basketball from 1951 to 1954. His love for the game mirrored his enthusiasm for life, characterized by a competitive spirit and an unwavering passion for winning.
Beyond his career, Donald is fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and playful nature. Whether he was engaging in lively card games, enjoying dance or tending to his flower garden, he brought joy to those around him. He was a devoted family man, known for being a one-woman man who lovingly cared for his wife, Ruth, over their 59 years of marriage until her passing in 2007.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Christine (Kreg) Ultican, along with his grandchildren: Dustin (Heidi) Ultican, Derek (Ashley) Ultican, Danielle (T.J.) Ultican-Johnson, Drew Ultican, and Carl (Sue) Adey, as well as Nathan (Amanda) Adey. Donald took great pride in his family, which has now expanded to include his great-grandchildren: Rory, Addie, Talbot, Teed, Cole, Pierce, Maverick, and Lyndee.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents Elma Mae and Newton Blaine Adey, his wife, Ruth, his son Terrance Lee Adey, and his brother Lee Adey. His family and friends will forever remember him as a compassionate leader, a loving father and grandfather, and a man who lived life to the fullest.
Visitation for Donald will be held on February 9, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by the funeral service at 12:30 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 131 N Canton Rd, Akron, Ohio, 44305. His remarkable life and the many memories he created will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
