Delores Nell (Toombs) Pepper passed away at her home in Akron, OH on March 20, 2013 at the age of 63. Dee was born on July 2, 1949 in Akron, OH, daughter of the late Ivan and Lena Toombs.
She graduated from Ellet High School in 1968 and then attended nursing school at Akron General Hospital. She devoted her life to helping others by being a dedicated and passionate nurse for more than forty years. Dee was committed to a lifetime of education and learning. After many years of nursing service, she returned to school to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Capital University, and then continued her education by working towards a Master's Degree in Geriatric Psychology at Kent State University.
She is survived by her three sons, Blaine Brinton (Denise), William Alford, and Andrew Alford (Jeffrey), as well as her three beautiful grandchildren Max, Eliza, and Katherine. "Mimi's" grandchildren meant the world to her.
She was preceded in death by her best friend and husband of twelve years, Thomas Ray Pepper. The two of them loved travelling the country by train to go to baseball games and historic sights.
They were the loving and devoted owners of several French bulldogs, Monty, Mac, Lofty, and Pete, as well as their cats Rajive, Tyler, Mo, Priscilla, and Nimitz. Dee was incredibly passionate about music and ballet. Her music tastes ranged from classical to heavy metal and everything in between. She also loved history, in particular that of the American Civil War and World War II. Finally, Dee believed in equality for everyone. She was a fierce advocate for social justice, marriage equality, and quality health care for everyone.
The family is encouraging donations to be made in Dee's name to The French Bulldog Rescue Network (www.frenchbulldogrescue.org) or The American Behcet's Disease Association (www.behcets.com).
Calling hours will be at Newcomer Funeral Home at 131 North Canton Road in Akron on Thursday March 28th from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a memorial service to be held that evening by Reverend Stacey Jenkins at 7:00 PM.
