Listen to Obituary

Cheri L. (Hewitt) Van Newkirk, age 79, a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on November 10, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 27, 1946, in Akron, Ohio, Cheri's life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and an unwavering love for those around her.

Cheri dedicated nearly three decades of her professional life to the Novak Insurance Agency, where everyone became part of her family and knew her as a reliable and warm-hearted presence. Following her retirement, she channeled her nurturing spirit into teaching preschool at the Lake YMCA, sharing her joy and enthusiasm with young hearts and minds.

A proud graduate of Ellet High School, class of 1964, Cheri formed lasting bonds with a remarkable group of friends from those school days; and the girls affectionately called themselves "The Hotties." This circle of friends exemplified the camaraderie that defined her life, as they regularly gathered to celebrate their enduring friendship.

Cheri possessed a selfless disposition, always willing to lend a hand whenever needed, often placing others' needs above her own. Her family was the center of her universe; she adored her daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Chris Miller, and cherished every moment spent with her grandson, Logan and her sister Linda. Cheri’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family to her nieces and nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Among her many joys, Cheri took great delight in tending to her yard and decorating her home each Christmas. She was known for her extravagant displays of thousands of lights, bringing festive cheer to her neighborhood. She thrived as the perfect hostess, creating cherished memories with her loved ones. The joy of helping her daughter and friends with their holiday decorating allowed her to share her passion for beauty and celebration.

Cheri was preceded in death by her cherished parents, Florence and Herman "Bud" Hewitt, her brother-in-law Jerry Putnam, her parents-in-law Mimi and Frank Van Newkirk, and life-long friend Pam Isakov. Despite these losses, her spirit remains alive in the hearts of those she touched, leaving behind an enduring legacy of love and kindness.

Visitation services will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home in Akron, Ohio, on Tuesday November 18, 2025, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with additional visitation on Wednesday November 19, 2025, from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM. A funeral will begin at 12:30 PM with Rev. Harlen Rife officiating. Final resting place is Hillside Memorial Park. Cheri’s family invites all who knew and loved her to come together to celebrate her remarkable life and lasting impact.

Cheri will be remembered not only for her endless love and compassion but also for the ripple effect of goodness she inspired in others. In times of sorrow, we hold tight to the laughter shared, the lessons learned, and the deep connections forged, ensuring her spirit lives on in every act of kindness that her memory inspires.

A special thank-you to her sister Linda and closest friend Paula McGovern for all their love and care to help Cheri in these last few years.
