Charles J. Smith, 73, passed away on April 12, 2014, with his family by his side. Charlie was born on January 25, 1941 in Akron, to the late Paul and Lillian (Rizzo) Smith. He attended St. Sebastian grade school and graduated from St. Vincent High School, Class of 1959.
After recovering from a sports-related injury, he returned to Akron University to complete his degree in accounting. In 1966 he met his wife, Mary (Barringer) Smith and they married in 1967. April 22nd would have been their 47th wedding anniversary. He also leaves behind his two beautiful daughters, Jennifer (Jason) Freeman and Angela (Randall) Huber. He loved being a Papa to his precious granddaughters, Hannah and Jordan Freeman and Emerson Huber. He is also survived by brothers, Terry (Sue), of Green, Ken (Bonnie), of Arizona, Larry, of Canton; and his sister, Patty Detec, of Florida. Charlie was a much loved uncle to 18 nieces and nephews in Florida, Arizona, Ohio, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Alaska and Australia.
They loved his quick wit, his love of sports, and love of music and movies. He loved to play games with his family during the holidays and his Fourth of July picnics. He will be missed by his three Godchildren, Carrie, Elisha, and Jason, his best friend, Art Krummel; his uncle, Frank Rizzo; sisters-in-law, Betty Nigh, Nancy (Allen) Campbell, and Debbie Smith and many cousins and friends. Standing at the gate of heaven will be his parents and his grandma Rizzo holding a plate of cannoli.
The family would like to thank Dr. Deborah Plate for her longstanding care during his illness. Calling hours will be Monday, 4-8 p.m., at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Munroe Falls Fire Department.
