Cecil Carl VanHorn

Cecil C. VanHorn, 89, of Akron, went home to be with the Lord on October 2, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his love for family and faith guided his life.

Born in Akron, Cecil was the son of Carl and Sadie VanHorn. He graduated from Garfield High School, proudly served two years in the U.S. Army, and worked 38 years at Continental-General Tire. He also gave back to his community by coaching Little League baseball in Ellet, enjoying golf, boating, and bowling, and through faithful membership at Springfield Church of the Brethren.

Cecil will be remembered for his generous spirit, servant’s heart, and willingness to always go the extra mile. To his family, he was everything—the best dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, and friend anyone could ask for. His greatest joy came from time spent with his loved ones, and the love he poured into his family will remain his greatest legacy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Doris; parents, Carl and Sadie; brother, George; and sister, Beverly. He is survived by his children, David (Jennifer) VanHorn and Diane (Bill) McFarland; sister, Sally Prease; grandchildren, Stefanie (Adam) Bonvenuto, Stacey (Aaron) Baker, Michael (Emily) Klosterman, and Ryan VanHorn; great-grandchildren, Drew, Lexi, Macauley, Lachlan, Oliver, Elias, Ezra, Ari, and Lola; along with extended family, neighbors, and friends.

The VanHorn family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Akron General Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Hospice for their exceptional care.

Calling hours will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at Springfield Church of the Brethren, 3500 Albrecht Ave. Akron, OH 44312 with Pastor Kris Hawk officiating. A committal service with well-deserved military honors will follow across the street from the church at Maple Hill Cemetery, where Cecil will be laid to rest with his wife, Doris.
