Brian J. "BJ" Murphy, 79, of New Franklin has raced full throttle into turn four to take his final checkered flag at the race of life on August 21, 2026 surrounded by family and friends. He was born on August 29, 1946 to Harry and Ruby Murphy in Toledo, Ohio. His passion for life and going fast allowed him to enjoy a full life. He was a proud U.S Army Veteran serving during the Vietnam era.
BJ worked at BF Goodrich for an extended period of time and was a lifelong machinist and mechanic on anything that could be taken apart and put back together better than before. On the weekends he could be found at the race track racing his own car number “45”, calibrating an engine he built or as a tech official. He was an avid bowler and spent many years bowling on several leagues. He did quite well at the casinos and enjoyed traveling and teaching his mechanical knowledge.
He was a member of the Coventry Lodge #665 and Tadmor Shrine for many years. He loved riding the mini bikes in the parades with his father, Harry who was also a member. He and his father helped build the Tadmor Shrine.
BJ was proceeded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruby, sister, Sue Mazzagatti. Survivors include his daughter, Jody Murphy of Akron, life partner, Barbara "Sweetie," Higgins, of New Franklin. Barbara was the love of his life and put the vroom in his step. They were truly meant to be together. Stepson Jerry Higgins (Maria) of Norton, brother, Rodney (Gail) Murphy of Norton, sister, Becky Dunnington (Roger) of Green, loving granddaughters Anna Tatham (Noah) and Jenna Higgins. He was loved by so many; family and friends, alike. There wasn't anyone he didn't know or know him.
The family would like to thank the Veterans Affairs for all the wonderful care he received throughout the many years. There will be a burial service at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd. Seville, OH. 44273 on September 3, 2026 at 10:45 AM. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Akron F.O.P. Lodge #7, 2610 Ley Dr., Akron, OH. 44319 to celebrate his life.
