Barbara Ann Dickson, 81, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of her family and the memories of a well-lived life.
Barbara was born on April 11, 1945, in Shelby, Alabama, to Joseph and Sarah (Gross) Danzy. At the age of four, she and her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, in search of a better life. Two years later, Barbara and her family moved to Akron, Ohio, where her father found work at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Barbara attended Robinson Elementary School and Goodyear Junior High School. She graduated from John R. Buchtel High School in 1963.
Barbara married Hubert “Boobie” Dickson in 1965, and together they raised two daughters, Kimberly and Hillary. While raising her family, Barbara dedicated many years of service to Akron General Hospital and later to Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital.
Barbara found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She loved gardening and yard work, listening to classical music, collecting primitive antiques, walking around the pond at Copley Community Park, and completing the New York Times crossword puzzle in the Akron Beacon Journal. Above all else, Barbara cherished her family. She loved spending time with her daughters and grandchildren and took great pride in their adventures, accomplishments, and milestones.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sarah Danzy, her ex-husband, Hubert “Boobie” Dickson, and her special sister-in-law, Beverly Danzy.
Barbara leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Hillary (Louis) Brooks and Kimberly Dorsey; grandchildren, Gabriel (Abigail Turner) Dorsey, Gabrielle (Trevor) Shires, Josiah Dorsey, and Reighan Brooks; brothers, Joseph Danzy II and Terry Danzy; sister, Sara Bragg, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sandeep Chatha and the staff at Copley Community Health Care, Dr. Michael Menefee and the staff at Akron General Physician’s Office Building/ Oncology Department, and the Traditions Health In-Home Hospice Care team for the compassionate care and support they provided.
The family also wishes to thank the many family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who called, texted, visited, brought gifts, and offered kind words and support during this difficult time.
