John Billy Groves of Doylestown, Ohio, passed away on May 12, 2022. John was born in Canvas WV on October 17, 1943.

After graduating high school, he attended Glenville State University, where he studied history. Later, he enlisted and proudly served in the US Army during the Viet Nam war. He was a combat medic and an infantry soldier with the 1st Air Calvary. He served from 1966-1968. Following the war, John moved to Akron, Ohio, where he met his first love and mother of his boys, Deborah (Wise) Groves. He soon after got a job at Firestone and the Ravenna Arsenal. In 1976, he got a job as a commercial truck driver. He retired as a truck driver after 35 years of service.

John loved the peaceful outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, fishing and spending time with family and friends on the porch or in his home. He took his sons, Jamie and Jeremy on many camping trips in West Virginia, on the Gauley River.

John loved classic country artists like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. He also enjoyed Court TV and Seinfeld. Some of his favorite movies were True Grit, The Jerk, Raising Arizona and Sling Blade. His son, Jamie would get him to laugh with an impression of Carl from Sling Blade.

John Billy will be truly missed by all who knew him. He was generous, kind and loving. He was raised Methodist and loved Jesus.

John Billy was preceded in death by his father, Arnett Groves, mother Clarous Neil, sisters Cathleen Robinson and Geraldine Tyree and wife Debra (Florence) Groves.

He is survived by his sisters Joann (Sonny) Anderson and Patsy Foster, brother in law Leonard Tyree. He is also survived by his sons, Jamie (Shannon) Groves of Norton, Ohio and Jeremy (Lesha) Groves of Denver, Colorado, grandsons Jared and Jude, granddaughters Summer, Isabel, Jolene and great granddaughters Penelope and Meadow. Also surviving are step sons Burt and Gary Gregory.

Per John Billy’s wishes, cremation will take place and he will be laid to rest with military honors at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, OH on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 12:45 p.m. Family and friends may meet just inside the front gate after 12:30 p.m.
