Our Guardian Angel

On September 12, 2020, a dear family lost their matriarch…
Margurine “Woods” Green (Granny) (Marie) was peacefully welcomed into Heaven with open arms after a battle with dementia at the tender age of 77. She was at home at the time of her passing, surrounded by family and love.

Born on October 27, 1942, Marie was loved by all who got the privilege to know her. She was a rather caring individual and would give the shirt off her back, her last dime and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Marie was such a unique lady; small in physique, but strong in voice and action. She had a heart the size of this world and would do absolutely anything to help her family and those in need. When you saw her, you saw boldness, courage, a warrior… Behind that boldness, though, was a sweet little lady who wanted the best for everyone. She always put herself last. Absolutely everywhere Marie went, she was well loved; in health and in sickness. Though somewhat shy, she could be the life of any party. She was the fire of our family. Oh, how much we are going to miss her beautiful soul.

Marie had a love for bingo and playing card games that was out of this world. Playing bingo was something that she took pride in for a lot of her life, well into her sickness. She had a great love for memories and pictures. You could always find her taking pictures, suggesting that pictures be taken and asking to pay for duplicates of pictures that she didn’t take. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, teaching her great-grandkids how to play pitty pat, popping up unexpectedly over her granddaughter’s houses, listening to music, dancing, and walking. She walked everywhere; all of the time. She valued family and had a strong belief in being healthy and taking care of yourself. Marie had a smile that would light up any room and a sense of humor that would have you laughing all day.

Marie came to Akron, Ohio all the way from Tennessee with her then husband when her eldest daughter was just six months old. Leaving everything behind her and beginning a new life, until recently, she was all that her children and family knew. She spent several years working at GoJo Industries before having a stroke that left her unable to work. Although she was unable to work, she was determined to get back to a good quality of life, and with rehabilitation, perseverance, consistency and hard work, she did just that. Marie lived such an interesting life and was such a blessing to all who knew her.

Marie wasn’t a religious person, but she was a believer. If you talked to her, you would have probably known that. She was always mentioning the “Good Lord”. She occasionally went to church with her granddaughter, where she was well loved. She asked the Lord Jesus into her heart in September of 2016, right at home in her bedroom. My, oh my, how she will be missed beyond comprehension.

Marie is preceded in death by her special friends James L. Woods, Alice Nurse, Rosetta Lang, Beverly Jones, Eva Brunson, Lillian Wilson, Lucille Bowick, Mosetta Cole and a brother by the name of Tyrone.

Marie will be lovingly remembered and terribly missed by her daughters, Dorothy (Curtis) Williams and Beverly (Otis) Prince; son, James Woods Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory and to carry on her legacy of love for others her grandchildren, Tamika (Victor) Hall, Tanisha Woods, Levell Woods, Jazzmere Loftin, Jearron Waters and JayOnna Bowen. Great-grandchildren, Dontiece, JhaLa, JaiMoreon, DaiZhaun, Amariah, Aonyst, J’Naela, Kar’Travion, R’Veione, N’Tavyaire, Tamareon, Layonna, Ady’Zeona, Iyanna, Shatasia, Heavenly, Chazvez, Desiree’ and Jearron Jr. We loved our Granny immensely and will miss the pancakes and eggs that only Granny could so deliciously make.

Special friends left behind are Shirley Rhoden, Lorene Johnson, Detra Waters, Johnnie Mae Spy, Ronnell Pickett, Cheryl Lynum, Grace Zupancic, Barbara Davis, Grady Hill and Ms. Julia Lewis, as well as masses of others whom she blessed with her graciousness and her love for others.

A great big thanks goes out to the staff at The Colony Healthcare Center who took exceptional care of Marie (Ms. Green) up until the point of her return home, but a special thanks to Latozma Lopp, Wyatt Ford, Joanne Bojo and Brianna Hamilton for the roles that they had in her care.
