John A. Esque
1938 - 2019

John A. Esque, 80, passed away after a brief illness surrounded by family on April 27, 2019. After proudly serving as an Army veteran, he worked for the City of Akron retiring from the Akron Fire Department as a Lieutenant after 27 years of service. The Soap Box Derby played a major role in John's life. He raced in the event as a child, volunteered for 50 years, served as chief inspector, and ultimately designed and built the prototype of the Master's Division car which continues to be used today. John was an avid Ohio sports enthusiast, always rooting for his Buckeyes, Browns, Indians and Cavs. He also enjoyed watching Nascar, drinking coffee with his buddies every morning and afternoon, and snowmobiling on Portage Lakes.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Millie; parents, Benjamin and Myrlie Esque; 8 siblings; and beloved French Bulldog, Bronson. He is survived by children, Vickie (Clarence) Uher, John M. (Gail) Esque; grandchildren, Jillian (Mike), Joshua (Jen), Michael, Chris (Sydney); great-grandchildren, Jackson, Ashton, Adrian, and soon-to-be Georgia; siblings, Richard (Karen) Esque, Shirley Coulter; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation from 12-2 and 4-8pm on Thursday, May 2 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Funeral service at 12pm on Friday, May 3 with visitation one hour prior. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the All American Soap Box Derby in John's memory.
