Bernard “Bernie” Klein died peacefully in hospice care on April 3, 2017 at the age of 74.
Bernie is survived by his wife Brenda Klein, daughter Kim Klein (Jeff Bobek), son Mike Klein (Monica), and brother Jim Klein. Bernie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his toy poodle Pebbles. He was preceded in death by Sandy Porzio Klein.
Bernie was born on March 26, 1943 in Akron, OH to Dick and Marie Klein. He graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School in 1961. He married Sandy in December 1963, moved to Tallmadge, OH in 1973, and was widowed in 1986. Bernie and Brenda were married on December 19, 1987. Bernie served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965 and was stationed in France and Maryland. Bernie worked for companies including The Akron Beacon Journal, Adamson, Central News, American Brewed Coffee Service, McLane Distribution, and Mitchens Transportation before retiring in 2013.
Bernie was passionate about O-gauge model railroading and was an avid camper, boater and card player. He was a member of numerous clubs including: Starcraft Campers, Tallmadge Jaycees, Jaycee Exhausted Rooster Klub, Berea Campers, Cuyahoga Valley Railroad Club, and the Akron Card Club. He was an active and dedicated member of Our Lady of Victory church and sang in both the funeral and the 5PM mass choirs. Bernie will always be remembered as being kind, gentle and fun-loving with an incredible work ethic.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron . A funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church located at 73 North Avenue in Tallmadge, OH. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bernie’s life. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests sending donations to Hospice of the Western Reserve so that a brick can be purchased commemorating Bernie's life and the wonderful hospice care he received. Checks should be made payable to Hospice of the Western Reserve and please write “Bernard J. Klein Brick” on the check’s memo line. Checks should be sent to: Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 Saint Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110 -or- they can be brought to the calling hours.
