Josephine Rae "Jo" Swartz
1923 - 2018

Josephine Rae Swartz (nee Pickle), “Jo”, age 95, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

She was born on January 25, 1923 in Akron to the late Argy Perry and Ida (nee Hester) Pickle. She was an independent, strong minded woman who worked hard to provide a good life for her family.

She met and then married Ralph C. Swartz on February 14, 1942, and traveled the United States with him during his early military service, coming home to Akron, when he was deployed overseas during World War II. When Ralph passed away in 1975, at the age of 54, Josephine continued working and maintained the life-style they worked so hard to achieve.

She was a loyal worker, having been employed at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Sun Rubber, Creme Lure Co., and finally retired from Akron General Medical Center after 23 years as a phlebotomist. She was a respected employee and enjoyed many lasting friendships with her co-workers and friends.

She had a deep love for her family, especially her sister, Mary. Jo was a proud grandmother of two and great-grandmother of four beautiful great-granddaughters.

Other than her parents and husband, Josephine was pre-deceased by her siblings, infant sister- Clara Pickle, Mary H. Simmons, and Milton H. Pickle.

Jo is survived by her children, David R. Swartz of Akron and Judy Ann (Richard “Dick”) Hinkle of Tallmadge; her grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn (Ameet) Shah of Sterling, VA and Timothy Richard (April) Hinkle of Brimfield; her great-granddaughters, Olivia Josephine and Madeline Joy Shah, and Allison Ann and Audrey June Hinkle. Her siblings, Jacqueline M. Moffitt of Mebane, NC and Argy P. (Shirley) Pickle of Uniontown; her sister-in-law, Dolly (Ralph) Petit of Mogadore and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family extends thanks to the staff of Essex of Tallmadge for their loving care of Josephine over the past 6 years.

A celebration of life will take place at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 12:00 PM, where Rev. Ron Shultz will celebrate Jo’s life.

Family and friends may visit from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Heart Association.
